RTD™ magnetic inspection
Magnetic inspection techniques use the principle that any flaws at and directly below the surface cause a magnetic stray field in a magnetized object.
This technique can be used to detect surface breaking defects, but only in materials that can be magnetized.
Magnetic inspection is an inspection method with which defects in or close to the surface (to a depth of approx. 2 mm) can be traced.
Magnetic inspection uses the principle that a crack or other discontinuity at the surface causes a magnetic stray field in a magnetized object. A crack will be made visible by detection of this field.
A refinement of the basic technique is Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL).
Magnetic Flux Leakage
Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) inspection is capable of detecting metal loss, e.g. as a consequence of corrosion. It gives qualitative rather than quantitative results, and can therefore be considered as a fast screening technique.
Following MFL inspection the indications are verified using ultrasonic inspection so that you can be certain that only relevant indications are reported.
